With MLB Opening Day finally here, the spotlight is naturally on the radar gun. In the modern game, velocity is often treated as the only metric that matters.

But at Ignite Performance, we view velocity differently. Velocity is not a goal to be chased at all costs; it is the byproductof a highly efficient, well-timed kinetic chain. While throwing hard is a requirement for high-level play, proper mechanics are what generate that force safely. If you want to stay in the rotation, you have to prioritize mechanics as the foundation for longevity.

The Kinetic Chain: Efficiency Over Effort

A pitcher is essentially a human whip. Power is generated in the legs, transferred through the trunk, and finally whipped through the arm to the ball.

Recent commentary in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (IJSPT) and Sports Health highlights that pitching is a total-body explosive event. When the kinetic chain is synchronized, the body distributes the massive stresses of throwing across multiple joints.

However, when there is a "break" in that chain—such as limited hip mobility or poor trunk control—the energy flow is interrupted. To maintain ball speed, the athlete often "over-throws" with the upper body. According to the research, these mechanical inefficiencies are direct contributors to increased joint loads at the shoulder and elbow.

The takeaway: A weak link in your movement doesn't just lower your ceiling; it shortens your career.

The DVS Score: Your Blueprint for Longevity

Because we know that mechanics and injury risk are inextricably linked, we are excited to announce a new offering at Ignite Performance starting this April: Pitching Evaluations using the DVS Score System.

The DVS (Delivery Value System) is a statistically validated method that moves past "style" and focuses on function. It identifies six specific components of a pitcher’s delivery to provide a score from 0 to 24.

Utilizing the DVS X-ray we can assess the sequencing of the baseball pitcher’s throw. By analyzing how a pitcher moves through space, we can identify "Red Zones"—mechanical patterns that have been proven to correlate with higher injury rates.

  • A Higher DVS Score: Represents a delivery that is repeatable, efficient, and places less peak stress on the UCL and rotator cuff.

  • The Goal: We aren't just looking for "perfect" form; we are looking to normalize your injury risk so you can stay on the mound for years, not just one season.

Training the Transfer: The Hard Roll

Understanding the science is one step; training the body to execute is another. One of our staple exercises for baseball athletes is the Hard Roll.

During the pitching motion, the trunk must act as a stable bridge. If your core is "leaky," energy generated by your legs evaporates before it reaches the ball, forcing the arm to "muscles" the throw.

The Hard Roll exercise (highlighted in recent IJSPT clinical pearls) focuses on:

  • Trunk-to-Hip Dissociation: Learning to move the upper body independently of the lower body—a key requirement for the "X-factor" stretch in elite pitching.

  • Rotational Efficiency: Building the core stability required to transfer force without losing energy.

  • Refining the Sequence: Ensuring your body fires in the correct order to maximize output while minimizing joint stress.
